What Golf Ball if for you?
This question is usually only asked by beginning golfers and intermediate golfers. Advanced golfers almost always know the answer to this question, so this information is primarily for less advanced golfers but also lets you know what to look forward to when you become an advanced golfer.
As a beginner, no matter what kind of golf ball you use, you are usually just trying to focus on keeping your golf ball in play and not lose it in the water, rough or trees. If that sounds like you, then you need to focus on purchasing any golf ball that is the least expensive possible. Knowing about compression, spin rates, and ball composition at this point won’t do anything to help you score any better. Once you’ve become more able to hit consistently down the fairway, then you can start looking into experimenting with other golf ball types. Right now look at wholesale, used, recycled, experienced, or bulk golf balls.
When you are only losing a few golf balls per round your game is starting to move towards intermediate status. The best golf ball for you now would be a Two Piece Distance ball such as the Callaway Warbird, Top-Flite XL, or Wilson Ultra. These golf balls have less spin to reduce hooking and slicing, have good distance, and hard covers for durability (they last longer). You should stay away from illegal golf balls. If you want to improve, play with the longest golf ball that is legal. Otherwise you will have a warped perspective of the actual state of your golf game and these golf balls are not legal to use in tournaments.
As an intermediate golfer, performance aspects of different golf balls can improve your golf score. Typically, accuracy (hitting it straight) and distance will be your preferred golf shot. Choosing a golf ball for you will be based less on price because you now occasionally finish a round with the same ball that you started with. Choice of a golf ball at this point will also be influenced by your swing speed. Senior and Lady golfers will prefer a Two Piece Low Compression ball such as the Maxfli Noodle, Precept Laddie Xtreme, or the Titleist DT SoLo. These balls can help with distance for moderate and slower swing speeds. Some have low spin for accuracy and softer covers for feel.
For higher swing speeds you will want a Two Piece Performance golf ball such as the Bridgestone e5, Titleist NXT or NXT Tour. These golf balls have a larger core for more distance and accuracy yet still do not have the spin or feel of a multilayer ball for short shots around the green or intentional controlled fade or draw golf shots.
As an advanced golfer, you are shooting par or better almost every time out and the best golf ball for you is a golf ball with Multilayer Construction such as the Bridgestone Golf Tour B330, Callaway Golf HX Tour, Nike One Platinum, or Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x. These balls offer better feel, higher spin rates which makes it so that you can control the ball better with fades and draws, and backspin to stop the ball on the green more quickly.
The downside of these types of golf balls is price as they can be very costly. If you are a good enough player to land in the advanced category, then squeezing every last bit of performance out of your equipment is worth the premium price and makes a Multilayer ball the best golf ball for you.
